Why is toilet paper so fluffy? Why are tissues so soft?

Put simply, the tissue paper is "compressed" to give it its fluffy, soft feel.

But one thing at a time: Tissue paper is an absorbent hygienic paper made of cellulose. At the beginning of the production process, the so-called headbox – the mixture that is introduced at the beginning – consists of more than 99 % water and less than 1 % cellulose.

By means of a sophisticated production process, it passes through various sections of the tissue machine, loses more and more moisture and thus reaches the Yankee cylinder (drying cylinder), the heart of the tissue production. The heat there is so great that the paper web is completely dry at the end. Directly after drying, the creping doctors are used. Depending on the angle, they crepe and add texture to the material more intensely or less intensely – this creates the desired feel.

The creping blade: Critical for the product quality

However, the quality of a tissue paper depends on many factors. This ranges at least from ‘A’ for raw material to ‘Y’ for Yankee cylinder. ‘C’ for creping blade also has a decisive influence on production and quality.

A good creping blade performs several tasks at once:

  • It detaches the paper web from the Yankee cylinder while protecting its surface.
  • It achieves the longest possible service life and thus maximum productivity.
  • It increases the tissue quality.

CERADIA® creping blades from Clouth Sprenger

With the aim of meeting the above requirements in the best possible way, Clouth Sprenger GmbH in Moers concentrates, among other things, on the development and production of creping blades.

Our CERADIA® creping blades are made of carbon steel and have highly wear-resistant ceramic or metal-based coatings. In combination with different angle geometries and designs, this ensures the widest possible range of options and flexibility for the tissue maker.

Creping blade holder GALENO – optimum result on the sensitive Yankee cylinder

The greatest danger to the Yankee cylinder clearly comes from uncontrolled vibrations of the creping blade. In the worst case, this leads to the formation of chatter marks on its surface. The consequences are insufficient product quality and high maintenance costs caused by grinding and coating the Yankee cylinder.

Because the causes of doctor blade vibrations can be very diverse, we have focused on a solution that avoids vibrations directly at the creping blade; i.e. it works independently of external factors: The creping doctor blade holder GALENO from Clouth Sprenger.
